Project Brief: In the project I will create a poster with eight typeface diagrams with structure and visual hierarchy. I will choose eight different typefaces, list their classification, history of the typeface and visual display of the typeface letters. This display will explain to the readers the differences in typefaces and explain the origins of each typeface so inform them of the differences. This will take about a week of labor to put together this project.
List of Typefaces
*Blackletter : Rotunda Pommerania
Origin: Holy Roman Empire 900 C.E.
History of the typeface: It originates in the Carolingian Minuscules a script that was used as a European standard for the Latin Alphabet so that across Europe it was readable for the literate persons.
*Humanist/Old Style : Bembo
Origin: Vienna, Italy 1495 C.E.
History of the typeface: Originally named for the literary poet Pietro Bembo. The punchcutter Francesco Griffo. It was revived by the Stanley Morison in 1929. The revival has four different weights and no italics.
*Transitional : Times New Roman
Origin: England 1931
History of the typeface: Commissioned by the English Newspaper "The Times." Created by Victor Lardent after Stanley Morison criticizing the newspaper for being badly printed and typographically antiquated. Morison supervised Lardent and used the typeface Plantin to base his design off of, but made changes for readability and space saving.
*Modern : Bell
Origin: England 1788
History of the typeface: Considered an early example of Scottish Roman style, created by Richard Austin while he worked in the English foundry owned by John Bell, who the font was named after. It was popular until it fell into disuse and was revived in the 1930's.
*Slab Serif/Egyptian : American Typewritter
Origin: United States 1974
History of the typeface: Created by Tony Stan and Joel Kaden for the International Typeface Corporation, based on the early form and monospaced of Shole's patent of the typewriter. Was first created as a cold type and now has been made into a digital.
*Sans Serif : Bank Gothic (Geometric)
Origin: United States 1930
History of the typeface: Designed by Morris Fuller Benton for the American Type Founders. It was an exploration of the geometric form and is contemporary with the rectangular style of the typeface "City" designed by Georg Trump. It also bears a comparison of the late 1800's engraving faces.
*Decorative/Display:
Origin:
History of the typeface:
*Script : Edwardian
Origin: United States 1994
History of the typeface: Created by Edward Benguiat, a passionate calligraphic typographer and published by Linotype. It was inspired by the appearance of a steel point pen that both pushed and pulled the ink. It was perfected to look like hand written type.
I want to make sure the form is correct before I add the information so that I don't spend a lot of time on a bad idea.
After Critique: I realize I'm behind a little bit on this project. I need to block in the rest of my typefaces so I can discover what will work and what will not.
Working process: As I was working on it this afternoon, I discovered the school does not carry the Bembo typeface and it would need to be purchased with the funds I do not have so I have exchanged it for Windsor.
*Humanist/Old Style : Windsor
Origin: Sheffield, England 1905
History of the typeface: Windsor was created by Eleisha Pechey for the Stephenson Blake type foundry. In almost of the the Woody Allen films of the 1970’s Windsor light condensed was used in the title sequence and the ending credits.
Working process 2: I have discovered for my design American Typewriter is just too big to fit with the in the parameters that the design has set and I will search for a new typeface to replace it.
*Slab Serif/Egyptian : Clarendon
Origin: England, 1838
History of the typeface: Clarendon was created by Robert Besley for a British Foundry approximately in 1838. It was named after the Clarendon Press in Oxford. It was used mainly by the German government during World War I and was used often on American old-west "wanted" posters.
Working Process 3: After I finished blocking in my last listed typeface, I remembered I had yet to choose one decorative/ display typeface. I scrolled through the typefaces to find one that I might like.
*Decorative/Display: Eroxion
Origin: United States 1997
History of the typeface: Eroxion created by Eduardo Manso in 1997. It is a good example of degenerative typefaces that began to be explored in the early 1990's.
Tight Rough:
After thoughts: I looked at my tight rough one more time and decided that the words "When type began" and "the End of Type" were lost and unconnected to the timeline so I took the words and put them in boxes connecting them to the timeline and keeping them from getting lost. I feel like even though the title Timeline of Type classes is not in a box, it runs along the time line keeping it with the whole structure of the form, but not getting lost within it.
After class Critique: There were still some changes that needed to be made to I worked to put those changes in and I came out with this deisgn.
Tight Rough:
Once I looked at it again after the long weekend I noticed that the "When Type Began" and "The End of Type" lines were not lined up with the rest and it just seemed natural that they needed to line up so I fixed that.
